The route to the Canary Islands : an escalating death trap on the way to Europe

Despite its dangerous nature, the migratory route to the Canary Islands (Spain) is now one of the main routes for entering Europe. The number of deaths and disappearances continues to rise, worsening an already heavy human toll. The growing use of this deadly route is mainly due to the militarisation of the borders and the externalisation of the European Union’s migration policy.
